There is this hue and cry over special powers given to armed forces is certain specific regions of the country. While, looking myopically one may tend to agree to a certain extent to giving these powers, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that whenever there’s power involved there will be certain amount of misuse. What we need to consider while giving away these special powers is we need to have the correct intent in place to resolve the issue in hand; when we give these powers it shouldn’t be just to react, but it should be in place to act proactively as well. Like any other corporate environment our armed force as well needs to be made accountable for the powers given to them.
While one may tend to argue about the social landscape in regions like Kashmir, there is no excuse for the chaos that is the North Eastern states. The simple reason behind these issues can be identified in the utter lack of earnest political will from the so-called political leaderships and intent from armed forces and police in these regions. The rampant violence and deteriorating social life in these regions is more economics driven rather then being geo political.
Right now the political landscape in India is such that each of the state government is not accountable to the federal government. This system needs to change. It should be the duty of the federal government to ask where the money is going. Currently the so called state governments are running like loose canons shooting at will.
So long this lack of accountability continues, the people at the helm will continue to loot and suck from the little remaining spirit of the masses in these regions.
